For years, there’s been talk of a Keith Richards documentary directed by Johnny Depp, with the working title Happy. But little has been heard of that in recent months, particularly with all of the Rolling Stones activity around their 50th anniversary, including their current tour and their own documentary.
But in a lengthy Stones feature in the new issue of British magazine Mojo, a sidebar reports that further work on the documentary took place in April.
“We shot a bit ’round Johnny’s house,” Richards told the magazine, adding that Tom Waits, Waddy Wachtel (guitarist in Richards’ solo band the X-Pensive Winos) and drummer Jim Keltner were present at the shoot as well.
Depp famously based his Captain Jack Sparrow character from the Pirates Of The Caribbean films on Richards, and Richards played his father in two of the installments in the series.
In January of 2011, Depp told Entertainment Weekly, “We shot for a few days, and we got 35 hours of footage. That’s me and Keith sitting and talking in a room that’s very, you know, apropos of Keith. We’re sitting on couches, having a drink, and talking.”
The film will also include performance footage of Richards with the X-Pensive Winos, along with a few guests, including Patti Smith and Norah Jones. That feels slightly reminiscent of the 1987 Chuck Berry film Hail! Hail! Rock And Roll, which featured interview footage as well as a live performance by Berry backed by a band led by Richards..

Johnny Depp announced that his fly-on-the wall documentary on Keith Richards is finally completed. Depp and Richards became friendly while working on the 2007 movie The Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End movie -- with Depp going on record as saying that he based his character "Jack Sparrow" in part on Richards' signature "elegantly wasted" demeanor. Richards returned the honor by playing Sparrow's father in the film.
Depp shed some light on the still-untitled doc to Britain's Event magazine, revealing, "I've been working on it for about four years now and we've just completed the filming. Actually, it's a little strange to call it a documentary; it's more an opportunity to experience Keith -- as people don't get to see him, because he's quite a mysterious being. Essentially it's Keith and I sitting around having a conversation and what it boils down to is his wisdom and his philosophy and his experiences -- and that would be cut with footage of his life."
The actor went on to say: "I got him for five days about three years ago, and then in February I was with him for another five days and we continued from where we left off. . . I feel blessed that this guy, who has never done anything like this before, has put his trust in me and allowed him to document his life. In some way -- and I'm not comparing myself to him -- I feel like (legendary music documentarian) Alan Lomax. . . Doing this with Keith and recording how he thinks and how he looks back at 50 years of fame is pretty fascinating."
Keith Richards admits that it's hard for him to let go of new work and finally sign off on any project: "No, I think everything I've ever done I coulda done better. But if I tried, I know I would've ruined it, y'know? There's a point where you have to hit something and say, 'That's as good as I can do it. That's as good. . .' Y'know, I mean, I could try and try again, but you drive it into the ground. Sometimes you just try to hit that spot where it's just about right. . . Y'know, and say, 'Hey guys -- we got it" -- it's a call."
There's been no release date set for Depp's documentary.
The Rolling Stones wrap their 2012-2013 50 & Counting Tour dates on Saturday, July 13th at England's Hyde Park.

Faces' Ian McLagan Says He'll Appear in Upcoming Keith Richards Documentary Comments Off Share ArticleShare Article
Theresa DiMenno; Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesIan McLagan is best known as the founding keyboardist of The Small Faces and The Faces, but the acclaimed rocker also spent some time as a sideman with The Rolling Stones. That association apparently has led to his involvement in a new documentary about Keith Richards that movie star Johnny Depp is directing.
In a recent interview with ABC News Radio, McLagan explains that Richards had called him up a few months back and asked him to fly to Los Angeles to take part in the movie.
"We went to [Depp's] house and were filmed recording with Keith, all day, and we cut three tracks," Ian reports. "And Keith was in great shape, great spirits."
The 68-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer reveals that the songs they recorded included new renditions of the Keith-sung Stones classics "Happy" and "You Got the Silver," as well as a brand-new Richards composition. McLagan says the new tune is "really, really strong" and describes it as "a real dark song, a bit of a country song." He adds that Keith told him that the tune was inspired by the influential country duo The Louvin Brothers.
McLagan also says he really enjoyed getting the chance to pal around with Keith again. "We just, like, looked at each other and laughed," he recalls. "And we just had our arm around each other chatting. It was just so lovely."
As for his take on Depp and the actor's friendship with Richards, Ian says, "Johnny Depp's like his son…he's the next Keith Richards, and he's such a sweet guy."
McLagan recently completed a 36-date solo tour, and he's planning to release a new studio album titled United States with his group The Bump Band soon. In addition, he tells ABC News Radio that he'll be appearing on upcoming albums by country star Jennifer Nettles and young U.K. rocker Jake Bugg. Check out the latest news on Ian at IanMcLagan.com and Facebook.com/IanMcLaganAndTheBumpBand.

ohnny Depp's upcoming documentary about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards will include some new music, as well as some new versions of familiar songs.
Faces/Small Faces Ian McLagen, who spent some time as a Rolling Stones sideman, tells us that during the spring he joined Richards and others to re-record versions of the Richards-sung Stones songs "Happy" and "You Got the Silver," as well as a brand-new song:
"Keith's great. I actually recorded with Keith...in L.A. for this documentary on his life that Johnny Depp is filming, and we had a beautiful day together," McLagen tells us. "We cut three tracks...Waddy Watchtel, Jim Keltner and myself and Keith."
Former Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor was also part of the session at Depp’s home studio, according to McLagen. No release date or title have yet been revealed for the documentary.
McLagen adds that he and Richards have enjoyed a warm friendship before, during and after the keyboardist's tenure with the Stones as demonstrated by an incident that took place when McLagen attended the group's concert earlier this year in Los Angeles:
"Keith, when he came 'round on the outside stage at the Staples Center, he saw me and he smiled, and then he carried on and he turned around and he faced me and gave me two fingers and said, 'F*** you!'" (laughs)
