Santa Fe could see a surge in hotel room rentals and restaurant customers next week, as some 300 journalists are expected in town to take part in an array of media-related events tied to Disney’s upcoming release of The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.
The city has licensed its Buckman Track ATV/MX Park to a group representing Kawasaki Motor Corp. — which just announced a publicity tie-in with Disney to promote both the film and Kawasaki off-road motorcycles, four-wheel vehicles and street motorcycles — for the week starting Monday. Kawasaki will use professional drivers to take members of the media and invited guests on side-by-side rides on the track.
Kawasaki just posted a trio of short videos on its website that link the adventures of the Lone Ranger and Tonto to modern-day motor-bike enthusiasts blazing new trails.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Studios announced early in 2012 that they were teaming up to produce a new film version of The Lone Ranger story to be shot in New Mexico, among other locales. An article in the July 2013 issue of New Mexico Magazine notes that the film was shot in five states over the course of 150 days, with much of the filming taking place along the Rio Puerco. The film’s budget tops the $200 million mark, according to most reports.
The Lone Ranger originated as a radio show some 80 years ago, before ABC utilized the characters for a long-running television series starring Clayton Moore as the title character and Canadian Mohawk actor Jay Silverheels as his loyal friend Tonto. In the new film, scheduled to be released July 3, Depp plays Tonto and Hammer plays the Lone Ranger. Efforts to get information on next week’s activities from both Disney and the New Mexico Film Office were unsuccessful Friday.
“I would hope that besides the attendees themselves, the publicity that the film generates will help tourism, but that remains to be seen,” said Jim Luttjohann, executive director for the Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The gate to the 55-acre Buckman Track in the publicly owned La Tierra Trails network west of N.M. 599 has been locked since last fall because of concerns about liability insurance. City officials have hired a consultant, Great Outdoors, to assess the track and provide a preliminary schematic design to ensure safe recreational use of the facility, and the city is looking for a nonprofit to keep the track open for local riders. However, there’s no firm timeline for when it might reopen to the public. http://www.abqjournal.com/main/210912/north/lone-ranger-brings-swarms-of-media-to-santa-fe.html - Citation :
- ‘Lone Ranger’ brings swarms of media to Santa Fe

The press launch for “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johhny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid, is expected to bring more than 300 film journalists to Santa Fe next week.
Coming to a place near you: 300 junketing movie journalists.
The press launch for “The Lone Ranger,” the Johnny Depp/Armie Hammer movie filmed largely in New Mexico last year, will take place around Santa Fe starting Monday, according to Santa Fe city government.
A city news release said more than 300 movie writers and broadcast journalists from all over the world are expected to be flown in for the event.
This isn’t the premiere of the Disney movie, which is being hyped as a major summer blockbuster. It’s the gathering where the journalists and critics get to see the movie in advance of its release and conduct interviews with the stars, activities intended to promote the film.
Representatives of assorted public agencies, including the state Film Office and the state Tourism Department, were tight-lipped about the press launch, apparently because of firm controls imposed by Disney.
But city government issued a news release about it Friday.
Actually, the release was primarily about why the city’s motocross track in the La Tierra Trail area west of N.M. 599 would be open next week. The Buckman Track has been closed since last fall because of concerns about liability insurance.
The track will still be closed to the public next week, but it’s been licensed to a company representing Kawasaki, a cycle manufacturer, as part of the press launch, under an arrangement that “includes substantial private insurance coverage.”
What’s a motocross track got to do with “The Lone Ranger”?
“Kawasaki will be using professional drivers to take members of the press and other guests on side-by-side rides as part of their experience in Santa Fe and northern New Mexico,” the city news release said.
“They want the journalists to be happy and have a good time,” said Kate Noble, head of the city’s Economic Development Division.
To that end, the state Tourism Department has prepared 315 gift bags for the junketeers featuring items like biscochitos, blue corn popcorn and red chile pistachios, according to a department spokeswoman.
Noble said this is the first time Santa Fe has hosted a movie press launch on this scale. “It’s very exciting,” she said.
Efforts to reach Disney through the Film Office or by other means were unsuccessful Friday.
But one theory being offered for why the press event is coming to Santa Fe instead of Hollywood or New York is that Depp – whose flamboyant make-up for the role of Tonto in “The Lone Ranger” is already famous from photos and the recently released film trailer – is making another movie in New Mexico. That’s “Transcendence,” about scientists trying to build the first self-aware computer.
The idea was apparently to have the media circus come to Depp, instead of the star leaving his work on “Transcendence” to accommodate the hype-fest.
In any case, it’s a good thing for Santa Fe.
“It really does highlight how important the film industry is in our community, economically,” said Cynthia Delgado of the city Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Not just when they’re making the movies in Santa Fe and New Mexico.
“New Mexico is really being highlighted,” Delgado said.
Noble said the 300 journalists expected for the event doesn’t represent how huge the press launch will be. “I think Disney is sending a small army,” she said.
Noble also said city officials hope to steer the visiting journalists’ attention to Santa Fe with a film fact sheet. “Why not a second story about ‘Crazy Heart’ and Evangelo’s?” Noble asked, referring to a scene filmed in the local bar for Jeff Bridges’ movie.
Noble said the event will include receptions and showings of “The Lone Ranger” for the press at the Regal 14. She said receptions are planned around town Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Rumor has it that Bishop’s Lodge will be headquarters for the press launch.
Richard Verruni, the lodge’s managing director, had no comment. “Our groups are confidential,” he said. ~~~ “One day, you’ll wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now”

- Johnny Depp speaks with 'CBS Sunday Morning'
by jmaloni Press release Thu, Jun 27th 2013 04:30 pm
Actor says he likes movie roles that are a little dangerous and have "a bit of a tightrope element"
Actor Johnny Depp likes movie roles that are a bit dangerous and include the risk of failure, he tells Lee Cowan in an interview for this weekend's "CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood," to be broadcast June 30 (9 a.m.) on the CBS Television Network.
"Hopefully, whatever you're approaching has some kind of, you know, tightrope element," Depp tells Cowan. "I think that if you don't feel that, if you don't feel some kind of, not fear necessarily, but you know, the possibility of falling flat on your face, I think you must challenge that."
Depp, known for eclectic roles in such films as "The Pirates of The Caribbean" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," is now taking on the role of Tonto in a film version of the iconic TV series "The Lone Ranger," directed by Gore Verbinski. This time around, though, Tonto is much more than a sidekick to the Lone Ranger.
"I was always uncomfortable with the idea that Tonto was given sort of instructions, you know, and sent off," Depp says. "I mean, the Lone Ranger's a nice guy, but what, how come he's treating the other guy like ... lesser?"
