ndependent.co.uk How do you get a debut novel published? It helps if your surname is Depp
By Arifa Akbar, Arts Correspondent Friday, 9 May 2008
Set in the celebrity-studded enclave of the Hollywood Hills, the novel sees a private investigator hired by an A-list actor who is receiving a series of chilling death threats from an obsessive fan.
Ordinarily, the thriller written by a debut novelist, Daniel P Depp, might have found a modest market among crime fictionfans.
But once publishers discovered that the writer could offer an "insider's view" of Hollywood, there was a savage bidding war to buy the rights to the book. For Daniel P is the half-brother of a certain Johnny Depp.
Loser's Town is poised to become a publishing phenomenon around the world as well as in its home market of the United States. The rights to it were bought by Simon and Schuster in Britain in a "pre-emptive" deal – when an offer is so high that the book is taken off the market – as well as being snapped up in Canada, Hungary and France, with more foreign rights due to be sold, according to The Bookseller.
Depp's literary agent, Meg Davis, said she expected the interest to be "global" in the months leading up to publication next spring, with a follow-up "series" already planned.
"Daniel has been a producer [with Johnny Depp] so it has got a lot of authenticity and it gives the reader an insider's view of Hollywood," added Ms Davis.
The book, which is described as "half literary, half commercial" in style, involves a blackmail plot which the hard-bitten private investigator, David Spandau, is drafted in to solve. But in spite of its insights into Hollywood's underworld, Ms Davis said it was "purely fictitious" and was not inspired by the life of the author's famous brother.
"It's about a fictitious gangster who decides the only way to get someone to make his film is to blackmail a famous actor to be in it. This is no connection to Johnny. It's about Daniel wanting to be recognised as a writer rather than as Johnny's brother. There's no gossip in it. You read it for finding out how Hollywood works," she said.
Like his famous half-brother, Johnny, with whom he shares the same father, Daniel Depp was born in Kentucky. He read classics at university and after various jobs as a journalist, bookseller, photographer and teacher, he set up a production company called Scaramanga with Johnny in Hollywood.
They both worked on the film, The Brave, in 1997, with Johnny directing and starring alongside Marlon Brando, while Danielco-wrote the script.
The film was about a Native American released from jail who is offered the chance to "star" as the victim of a snuff film for a huge sum of money which would help his poverty stricken family.
The brothers made no other films together but the experience gave Daniel Depp a profound insight into the way Hollywood functions. Ms Davis said: "There is always work for a private investigator in Hollywood. You get a lot of actors – especially those who are stellar – who get death threats, or offers of marriage."

by Graeme Neill 18.12.08
Daniel Depp Loser's Town is former bookshop-owner, screenwriter, producer and journalist Daniel Depp's début, a funny and readable tour through the sleazy underbelly of Hollywood. Stuntman turned private investigator David Spandau is hired to help rising star Bobby Dye, who is being strong-armed by ambitious gangster Richie Stella. Spandau quickly discovers that Stella's drug racket is nothing compared to the ruthlessness of the Hollywood machine.
So far, so Elmore Leonard. But the book benefits from Depp's substantial experience of how that Hollywood machine works. Five minutes into the interview, he casually mentions that he finished the novel at his brother John's house in France. Yes, that one. Daniel is the half-brother of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star and they co-wrote the screenplay to Depp's directorial début, "The Brave" ("a turgid and unbelievable neo-western", according to a 1997 Variety review).
Depp explains that he gave his brother an early version of the novel, saying to him "regardless of what everybody says, it's not about you". "John was ecstatic about it when it got signed up," he adds. He is also quick to play down assumptions that the book would be full of easily recognisable caricatures of Hollywood stars and moguls. "It would have been a great opportunity to pay back some people but that wasn't on the agenda. Maybe it should have been."
Depp was born in Kentucky and he says he spent most of his childhood sneaking into cinemas to watch French New Wave movies. Before he started work in Hollywood, Depp ran his own bookstore selling rare books on western Americana and the history of California. He still misses it ("booksellers are all crazy" he says wistfully), but moved on to help set up production company Scaramanga with his brother in the early 1990s, An experience he summarises as: "I had to listen to writers pitch scripts that we liked but had to reject for one tedious economic reason or another."
Hooray for Hollywood As with other mystery novels set in southern California, Los Angeles is as much of a character as the chancers and schemers in Loser's Town. "It's like Oz," says Depp. "Everybody is completely made up. Little Betsy Smith from Iowa gets a publicist and becomes Paris Hilton.
"I have a love/hate relationship with Los Angeles. I think if you are going to look at how the rest of the 21st century will pan out, look at Los Angeles. You first see here all the problems that people are going to experience across the rest of the country in LA."
He says that he always wanted to write, and having Loser's Town as a novel rather than a screenplay let him have greater flexibility. "I don't think this is grand literature but I wanted to write something entertaining," he says. "I love the genre. A lot of the best social criticism comes out of the mystery and thriller genre."
Simon & Schuster has a nationwide tour planned for Depp when the book is published in March. Depp says that he has been quite taken aback by the similarities between publishing and movie making. "I imagined publishing to be much more laid-back and genteel. The nature of screenwriting is that it's really hectic and quite insane. It seems like 15,000 people have to have a say in what you are writing. I thought with writing a book you get to go away on your own but it turns out there's almost more fuss."
Depp says the next Spandau novel will look at an ageing actress being hassled by a stalker and will take in "the grand debauchery" of the Cannes Film Festival.

- Where did the idea for David Spandau come from?
I’ve met a lot of stunt people who tend to be no bull, straightforward types. They do crazy things like rodeo in their spare time. The contrast between this no-nonsense cowboy-type PI trying to do his job and all the Hollywood foolishness seemed perfect.
So are you a bit of a macho ranch hand type?
I grew up in Kentucky where people are always plopping you on a horse, so that part was inescapable. I’ve never been crazy enough to rodeo, although I’ve had multiple concussions from boxing, broke my shoulder playing American football, crushed a disc in my neck rock climbing, and snapped my leg in half on a motorcycle. Does this mean I’m macho? I suspect all it really means is that I should take up needlepoint.
Why does LA make such a great backdrop for crime fiction?
LA may be the logical conclusion of the American Dream. There’s no place left to go but into the drink. It’s a weird concentration of almost mythic ugliness and beauty.
What makes a great crime story? Plot or characters?
Oh, the characters. I suspect this is true for most American detective writers.
Which is easier – writing movie scripts or novels?
Movie scripts are technically easier, but are a faster road to the madhouse. You never write one movie script, but endless drafts. You learn to develop a hide like a rhino or die. But you often get to work with very talented people, and you eat very well. When you write a novel, you sit in a room day in, day out going a little nuts from loneliness.
Are all Hollywood actors as disturbed as Bobby Dye?
More than a few might be called disturbed. But you can’t dump people into such a public fishbowl and expect them to behave as if they’re back home on the farm. Even pandas get a little weird when you expect them to mate in front of a hundred people.
How much of a help, or hindrance, is it being Johnny’s brother?
It’s always opened some doors, of course, but frequently the wrong ones. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve shown up in a producer’s office to pitch a script only to find out they were trying to get to John. This certainly isn’t John’s fault, and it would be hard to think of anybody more supportive of my work. When the book got bought, he was probably happier than I was.
What next?
I’m now finishing the second Spandau novel, called Babylon Nights. It’s about an actress of a certain age who gets stalked by a psycho from LA all the way to the Cannes Film Festival. Cannes is like placing a Roman orgy at Disneyland, so it’s fun to write about.
