Disney announced today that the film is back on track, and the new release date is May 31, 2013. “Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski are such a talented combination and we’re thrilled to get back to work with them on The Lone Ranger,” a Disney spokesperson said.

The update on the classic cowboy epic was set to star The Social Network’s Armie Hammer in the title role and Johnny Depp as Indian scout Tonto, but when the budget soared to $250-million-plus, and Universal/DreamWorks’ Cowboys & Aliens underperformed at the box office, studio heads cried “Whoa!” In mid-August, two months before shooting was set to begin, the film faced the possibility of being scrapped completely.

Since then, director Gore Verbinski (the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have been negotiating with the studio in a bid to lower projected costs to a more manageable $215 million and keep the movie alive. The script, which adds heavy supernatural elements to the Western, was tweaked to reduce visual effects costs, and the stars are said to have accepted upfront salary concessions (likely to be repaid on the back end if the movie is a hit.)

The current target is for a February start date, when we will once again hear: Hi-yo, Silver! Away!

Alors comment sont-ils tous parvenus à un compromis, peut-on légitimement se demander ? Eh bien Bruckheimer a une réponse des plus simples et des plus surprenantes : « Nous avons refait le plan de travail. (…) Si nous avions une scène impliquant des dizaines de figurants et que le lendemain, nous ne tournions qu’avec Tonto et le Lone Ranger, nous avions ces figurants, et toute l’équipe qui s’en occupe, en stand by. Alors nous avons regroupé les scènes de foule d’un côté, pour pouvoir libérer les équipes [lorsqu’elles ne travaillent pas]. Ca fait quand même 150 personnes. Ce n’est pas tant les figurants que les gens qui les habillent, les maquillent… Puis de l’autre côté, nous avons regroupé les scènes où seuls Tonto et le Lone Ranger apparaissent pour que l’équipe soit plus petite. Ainsi, nous avons économisé 10 millions de dollars ».

Loin de nous l’idée de faire les marioles ou de remettre en question les compétences des équipes techniques de Bruckheimer (on pense sincèrement que le monsieur n’a plus grand chose à prouver), mais n’est-ce pas là le principe d’un plan de travail ? L’efficacité ? Étrange de constater que l’un des plus gros producteurs hollywoodiens a l’impression d’avoir eu l’idée de l’année en faisant simplement preuve de bon sens. Ne pas bloquer les figurants, les pôles maquillage et costumes, alors qu’ils n’ont rien à faire mais qu’il faut les payer quand même, ça c’est vraiment une marque de génie. On imagine bien que Bruckheimer n’a pas eu à faire d’économie depuis bien longtemps et qu’il n’a jamais été à quelques millions près, mais là… Avec une telle logique, on est quasiment sûr qu’il y a encore 1 ou 2 millions de dollars à sauver par ci par là. Si ce n’est 10 ou 20.

La production du film commencera en Février 2012 pour une sortie programmée aux USA le 31 Mai 2013. Le budget est maintenant estimé à 215 millions de dollars.

L’acteur, vu dans TRUE BLOOD ou TRON L’HÉRITAGE, aura le mauvais rôle…

Vous le connaissez de TRUE BLOOD (il était Franklin Mott), TRON L’HÉRITAGE, THE CAPE ou encore DE L’EAU POUR LES ÉLÉPHANTS : il a un visage très singulier, sévère, ce qui en fait un excellent enfoiré de cinéma. James Frain (oui, c’est son nom) assumera ce rôle dans LONE RANGER, prochain blockbuster Disney budgété à 215 millions de dollars et adapté d’une série radiophonique et télévisée vieille de sept décennies, mettant en scène un justicier à cheval pourfendant l’oppresseur dans le grand Ouest grâce à son sidekick, Tonto. Ce dernier sera incarné par Johnny Depp, le Ranger aura les traits d’Armie Hammer. Le grand vilain, lui, sera campé par Tom Wilkinson, autre acteur habitué aux rôles pas sympas. James Frain campera d’ailleurs son bras droit, supervisant le boulot des travailleurs indiens et chinois sur un chantier de chemin de fer.

C’est dans six semaines que le tournage de LONE RANGER pourrait débuter si les prises de vue ne sont pas encore repoussées pour de quelconques problèmes de gros sous.

James Frain rejoint le casting de The Lone Ranger
L’acteur James Frain (True Blood) a été engagé pour jouer dans le film "The Lone Ranger" dirigé par Gore Verbinski. Il rejoint ainsi Johnny Depp qui y jouera le rôle de Tonto et Tom Wilkinson qui sera le grand méchant du fim. James Frain pourrait quant à lui y camper un contremaitre ferroviaire qui exploite des ouvriers asiatiques en les faisant travailler par la terreur.

GV: It's funny because we're in active prep on "The Lone Ranger," and there's this pesky little thing called gravity, which is really a bitch. We have trains and horses, and there's so much, "Well, you can't do that, and the camera won't do that." In many ways, it's liberating to do an animated film because the only limitation is your imagination. But at the same time, when you're making a live-action movie, you're sort of orchestrating chaos. You have a plan, but you're also really taking advantage of gifts that occur because an actor does something that he didn't even expect.

CG: Speaking of "The Lone Ranger," there were a lot of reports about the budget of the film ...
GV: Oh my god, ridiculous. We hadn't even shot a frame of film. I'm not quite sure why it was news. There were probably three other films at the same time that were going through exactly the same thing that weren't reported on. It was kind of odd to have your budget battles publicly displayed. It's a $209 million (film) -- once you get in that range, (the film) has to be an event. We needed the tools to complete that, and we struggled. It's happened on almost every movie I've made, and certainly other directors I know go through it all the time. But I sort of feel like that movie's been talked about so much, so it's nice to go off the radar, make it and maybe we'll have something we can talk about again. Every movie has the same basic percentage of the number that they have to grind down. That's what we were doing. That's what we're continuing to do.

CG: "Lone Ranger" marks another collaboration for you and Johnny Depp. What works well in that relationship?
GV: I don't have a soundbite answer for that. I think it comes down to trust. We had just started shooting the second "Pirates," and I was talking to him about this lizard project, this chameleon with an identity crisis in the West, and he was just like, "I'll do that!" Never read a script. We didn't talk much more about it. From time to time, I'd say, "Here's what I'm doing on the lizard project." We obviously wouldn't have gotten the film made if he wasn't on board. He's very much a two- or three-take actor and really knows where the camera is. He isn't sort of improvising in a way that is unusable when you get into the edit room. (He gives) seemingly wild performances, but they're actually in a frame, and that's really wonderful for a director. He's very in control of his instrument. (Having that) relationship with an actor where he's willing to throw those eggs against a wall, that's where the joy comes in. We're both fans of the awkward moment. The pursuit of that awkward moment is where (the relationship) becomes symbiotic.

CG: Do you generally rehearse before you start shooting?
GV: It's a funny question because I miss rehearsing desperately. I think the last time I had real proper rehearsal was probably on "The Weather Man." These big movies, actors come in from London the day before you shoot the scene. We'll block it, chalk mark out all the camera moves. Actors will go to makeup, and we'll start lighting and prepare the work for the day. If it's an elaborate action set piece, I have storyboards. If it's a dialogue scene, we rehearse it the day of. But that a month of rehearsals prior to shooting with all your actors in one place, that is so hard to get these days.

CG: How important do you think the role of franchises is to the studios right now? GV: They're a form of alleviating risk because you have data. Before you have a franchise, there's no data so it's kind of horrifying. But I think data is the enemy of creativity, too. Four-quadrant movies used to be an accident, and now people talk about it as if we're going to make a four-quadrant movie. If all we made were sequels and nothing new is coming out of the pipe, there are no new franchises being created.
