Spotlight on Shiprock: 'Lone Ranger' featured scenery, not local extras By Jenny Kane jkane@daily-times.com Updated: 07/30/2012 11:49:43 PM MDT
SHIPROCK — Few locals were able to snag roles in the new film "The Lone Ranger," though it was filmed right in their backyard.
Earlier this month, crews from the Walt Disney production of "The Lone Ranger" shot scenes of the western remake just a mile from the base of Shiprock, the natural landmark.
The production filmed from July 16-18 and prepared sets from July 9-13. None of the Shiprock scenes featured local extras, though other scenes will.
"The Lone Ranger" tells the fictional story of a masked ex-Texas Ranger who fights injustice with his Native American companion, Tonto, in the rough-n-tough West.
The film is based on a character who first was brought to life in a 1933 radio show, and later came to life in a 1940s television show.
Now, the Lone Ranger and Tonto, played by Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp respectively, are being revived in a feature-length film to come out in July 2013.
Many of the scenes will take place in New Mexico.
"They say, This is what I'm looking for,'" said Kee Long, program manager for the Navajo Nation Broadcasting Services office. "We find the spot they need."
A permit from the Navajo Nation Film Office allowed crews to film near Shiprock, though they were not permitted any closer because the rock is considered sacred.
"We restrict the activity directly underneath," said Long.
The office distributes permits to large scale projects involving photography and film, many of which have passed through the Advertisement Four Corners area's scenic tours.
"The Lone Ranger" film hit up Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly and Shiprock — all while accompanied by a film liaison, someone designated to communicate between the crew and the community.
The scenes filmed near and around Shiprock cannot be disclosed, Long said, but they likely will not be significant scenes.
"We might end up with only four or five frames," said Long.
None of the frames will feature local talent, but a handful of extras from San Juan County will star in the film. They will be seen on sets in Albuquerque, according to the Extras Casting Director Elizabeth Gable.
Most extras are from Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Gallup. About 10 are from the Farmington area.
"We are using a lot of Navajo, about five from Farmington," Gable said.
Chris Overson, from Kirtland, spent about 26 days filming for "The Lone Ranger."
"They called for my 2-year-old daughter, they called for my 8-year-old daughter, they said, OK. Do you want to be in it too?'" said Overson, a theater technician at Brooks Isham Performing Arts Center.
The sets were marvelous, as was the cast, which includes Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Hammer — all of whom he caught glimpses of on set.
"Sometimes, you're just going to be the pixel in the upper left-hand corner of the screen," said Overson. "It's still fun."

Extras sought for ‘The Lone Ranger’ filming near Angel Fire
Staff report Published: Wednesday, August 15, 2012 2:34 PM MDT Parts of the Hollywood movie “The Lone Ranger” starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer reportedly will be filmed in the Angel Fire/Taos area within the next few days, and Extras Casting Director Elizabeth Gabel is looking for talent.
Gabel, of EG Productions in Albuquerque, said filming is scheduled to begin about Monday (Aug. 20) in the Angel Fire/Taos area.
“We don’t have a certain date, but it’s in that time-frame,” she said.
New Mexico Film Office Director Nick Maniatis would not confirm that, but he said filming of the production would take place in New Mexico for the next two weeks.
* “For security and other reasons, I can’t tell you where they’re going to be shooting other than they’ll be shooting around the state,” he said.
Gabel said she is looking for men, women and children between about 9 and 70 years old to appear as extras.
“I’ll probably need between 20 and 25 (extras),” she said.
Anyone interested is asked to send a recent photo, with no hats or sunglasses, along with sizes to Gabel at elizabeth@egcasting.com.
Gabel needs to know the height and weight of everyone interested in being an extra. Men are asked to include their neck, sleeve, waist, hat and shoe sizes, and women should provide their bra, waist, hips and shoe sizes.
In the last five years, Gabel has done casting work for many Hollywood films including “No Country for Old Men,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “North Country,” “Appaloosa,” “Terminator Salvation,” “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” and “The Book of Eli,” according to her website.
Depp has been cast as Tonto and Hammer as the Lone Ranger in “The Lone Ranger,” which is schedule to be released July 3, 2013 in the United States, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Lone Ranger rides at Santa Anita
August 18, 2012 by admin Filed under Scott Hettrick by Scott Hettrick
My friend Randy e-mailed a photo to me Friday morning of an old Western-style train car. He told me the new Disney movie version of “The Lone Ranger” starring Johnny Depp as Tonto is shooting right next door to his office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the train car was plainly visible.
I said, what a coincidence because “The Lone Ranger” is shooting right across the street from my office here in Arcadia too — at least they are setting up a giant green screen (it’s actually blue) for a second unit to film some visual effects shots for the movie for a few days once they get finished with the structure. Most of the principal photography for the movie scheduled to open on July 3, 2013, has been in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Utah all year. (Armie Hammer has the title Kimosabe role.)
Photo my friend Randy took Friday next to his office building in Albuquerque, NM
But making it even more strange, when I took a closer look across the street, I saw the exact same train car sitting here at Santa Anita as Randy was looking at in Albuquerque, so I sent him a photo of nearly the same thing he had just sent to me.

No doubt the scenes on the train in the movie will take place neither in Albuquerque or Arcadia, but we have the photos to prove they were in both places at the same time.
