No more "You know"…

Vanessa Paradis: Expressing myself is therapy

EN Interview 1 - With a newly shorn hairdo, Vanessa Paradis, 41, is in New York wearing a white Chanel ensemble and almost nude make-up. Paradis has been in the public eye many years. She first came to fame with the single, Joe le taxi, in 1987. The stunning French actress and pop singer is known worldwide for her relationship with Johnny Depp which lasted from 1998 to 2012, and with whom she shares custody of their children: Lily-Rose, born 1999, and Jack, born 2002.

She is a spokes model for Chanel and is currently starring in the new Woody Allen film, Fading Gigolo, and follows with two other movies released this year: Rio, I Love You, as well as Very Bad Girls. Paradis spends her time between Los Angeles and Paris.

THE INTERVIEW:

Q: Why did you cut your hair?

PARADIS: Well, I shot a short movie, Rio, I Love You, with John Turturro, who directed and acted in it. You know how they did New York, I Love You, and then Paris, I Love You, so they are making one on Rio now. And John and I were talking, and he said, ‘Why don’t you cut your hair?’ And I was so ready to cut my hair so it was no big deal to me, but it made a lot of fuss, (laughs) but it’s just a haircut and it grows back and everything is normal.

Q: It didn’t hurt.

PARADIS: No. (laughs)

Q: So Fading Gigolo is your first English spoken film. Why did you wait so long?

PARADIS: I was waiting for a good movie. It’s funny how everybody thinks it’s just easy. Obviously, I have lived in America for a long time, and I am an actress and a singer, and so people think, why didn’t I work in America? And it’s not just as simple as, ‘I want to make movies in America.’ Like, that doesn’t mean anything. There’s good and bad. I am just attracted to good roles and good movies, a good director and although there are a lot of them in America, but they just weren’t interested in me so far.

Q: What are you most passionate about these days? I know you’re acting of course, but you’re also a musician. So what gives you the most satisfaction; music or acting?

PARADIS: It’s hard. They both give me a big satisfaction but music is more personal. Even if in music, if I don’t write all my songs, I don’t produce my records, but I give my opinion, I give my ideas. I say what I want and what I don’t want. In music, it’s your world, your project, and it’s more intimate, you don’t work with a big crew of people, you are in the studio and the satisfaction comes from playing someone else and you feel like a kid again. You take a vacation from yourself and it feels really good but it’s someone else’s world and someone’s creation which feels really nice. I love to be directed and step in someone else’s world, I do.

Q: Can it feel therapeutic when you act and go into someone else’s world?

PARADIS: Of course it does because expressing yourself is the best therapy and it’s a way of expressing yourself. You express and evacuate a lot of things.

Q: On stage and screen, you are also a canvas for people’s desires and dreams. How do you feel about that? Is it a scary thought that sometimes people can be in love with you who you don’t even know?

PARADIS: (laughs) I don’t think of that in that way very much; all I think about is that I get to do what I love because of them, because they are here, because they like to hear the records and they like to make that move for me and I get to do what I love to do. And so it’s like when I get to do concerts, because it’s a very sharing moment, like, we get what we want to do on stage, but we do it better with the public when they are there and they are feeding you and they are reacting and participating and stuff. So, I like to think of that more than the rest, (laughs) but if I do inspire people, I am very flattered.

Q: Do you wonder sometimes what people are doing when they are listening to your music?

PARADIS: I hope they are having fun. I love fun. (laughs)

Q: There’s one of your songs in the movie.

PARADIS: Yeah. It’s actually, John Turturro asked me to sing the song for the movie and I first recorded a capella for him so he could actually play the song like this, and I was going to make it with music and I was recording my album, so we did it in that time, and the song fit so well into my Love Songs album, which is called Love Songs, so I got to put it on the record, but it was John’s idea.

Q: Talking about the theme of the movie, women buying sex, it’s not a very common thing you hear about. Do you think that this is going further into women’s sexual revolution?

PARADIS: Well I don’t think it’s only buying sex because he has one really old customer and he rubs her feet or something, or he talks with her. Me, he gives a massage, I don’t think there’s any revolution in it because it’s a really old profession but what is told in the movie, is that it’s okay, it’s no big deal, it’s not grave, it’s not dangerous, and it’s okay. Make yourself feel good, it’s alright. And we are talking about feminine prostitution for men, it’s all okay, it’s all fine, but as soon as a woman does it, she’s a slut or an old fart, and the movie puts things back into perspective a little bit where it’s like, this is only fair right? (laughs)

Q: And loneliness I think, because she is so honest about being lonely, which is kind of like a little taboo today, and we all experience it.

PARADIS: It is very concrete and yet it doesn’t seem concrete. Somebody breaks their leg or they have a grave sickness, its concrete, it’s right there and they have a problem. But loneliness feels like people are too greedy, ‘Oh are you bored, oh are you lonely?’ It doesn’t feel like a real problem, but it is an enormous problem and people kill themselves because of loneliness. So I think that’s why the movie makes you feel so good because it shows people of a different age, a different colour, a different culture, all going for the same thing. I guess it makes you feel less alone, the movie.

Q: I know we talked about not making plans and living in the moment, but what do you imagine in your coming years?

PARADIS: I don’t know; there’s so much to do right now. When you are working three jobs and you are a mum and you live on two different continents, right now is really enough. Already to make all this work for everybody, I don’t know, but I am doing promotion for the movie now and I have got a tour coming up and I have got to think about the lights and the sets and the set lists and the songs, that is immediate. But in my head I think, ‘Yeah, I would love to make more movies, I would love to do this, I am going to make a new record, go on vacation.’ (laughs) So, stuff like that.

Q: There’s always something to do.

PARADIS: Yeah.

Q: How was it shooting in New York City? Did you get special energy from it? Is New York City one of your favourite cities?

PARADIS: Yes. I lived here 20 years ago and I got my first feeling of adult freedom here, because I was already working and being famous in France for a few years and then I came here and I got to just be a regular person, walking the streets and getting that crazy, beautiful energy that there is here and I totally fell in love with the place. And I didn’t come back here very much, not long enough at least and this time to have to be here for a month and a half and working with New Yorkers and also going through areas I have never been. I had never been to Williamsburg before, and so I got to see a lot of new places but also be part of it because you are working in it and we were a lot of time in the streets walking in Manhattan and it was magical, I was so happy.

Q How does religion and spirituality play a role in your own life?

PARADIS: Well, I don’t follow any religion but I do think that there’s something. I feel that there’s something great and grand that I could pray to and that I can refer to and thank also for a gift I got in life. I just don’t go through the kind of organisation or rules whatever, but what I feel is directly from my heart.

Q: What is the biggest difference between American and French people?

PARADIS: It’s a different culture, different approach to things, different ways of living. In France it becomes 12:30, everybody stops working and goes to eat, and take an hour and a half to eat, and we enjoy it and the same at night for dinner and everything and here is a different thing. But there’s good in every place, you have got to kind of make your own, clean up and take what’s best and wherever you go and of course you may compromise and I don’t know, some people think that French women are very confident. For example, I heard that a lot in America, people saying, French women are so, so confident and I don’t think that we are more or less confident, it’s just our way of talking to people, addressing people, we just have different manners. (laughter)
