- “The Rum Diary” – Film District – dir. Bruce Robinson
Synopsis: Paul Kemp is a freelance journalist who finds himself, at a critical turning point in his life, drawn to the Caribbean. Self reflection, booze and destruction ensue.
What You Need to Know: Anyone who’s a fan of Johnny Depp in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (is anyone not?) should be looking forward to his long-awaited second role as a Hunter S. Thompson surrogate. Cult filmmaker Bruce Robinson (”How to Get Ahead in Advertising”) — who hasn’t helmed a feature-length film since “Jennifer Eight” in 1992 — is directing. He’s also a name you may recognize as the mind behind the wonderfully acidic English black comedy, “Withnail and I” – one of Depp’s all-time favorite films. Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins and the easy-to-look-at Amber Heard co-star, and it all sounds like a combination of willing elements, but the film has been complete for over a year now and the delays do suggest a stinker that the distributor is afraid to release.
Release Date: Or rather, there was no distributor for a long, long time (also worrisome), until the production company behind the picture, GK Films, formed the distribution company Film District. There’s talk the film will land in the fall of 2011, but no official release date exists. toujours ravie de regrouper les articles dans lesquels est évoqué le film... même si il n'y a rien de nouveau http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/the_playlists_100_most_anticipated_films_of_2011_-_part_3/ | |

| Le compositeur du film, Christopher Young - Citation :
- MG: You worked on “The Rum Diary”, what was your inspiration?
CY: Speaking of “Jennifer Eight”…the reason I got on that is because Bruce Robinson, the director, is someone I had met on “Jennifer Eight.” He was the director on “Jennifer Eight” and he was so displeased with his experience on that movie that he swore to God that he would never direct again! He’s a very successful writer and actually started out as an actor…he did a few little things and then got into writing. I believe his first Academy Award nomination was for his screenplay for “The Killing Fields.” “Jennifer Eight” is his second film, his first being “Withnail and I.” Now he writes the screenplay for “The Rum Diary,” based on the Hunter S. Thompson book, and Johnny Depp decides he wants that to be his next movie and happens to love…”Withnail and I” is one of his favorite movies. So he brought Bruce out of directorial retirement to direct and Bruce told him he wanted to bring me back to do this. So we reconnected after not having seen each other for so many years. It was a departure for me. Not in the way of style but it was a departure…it’s sort of 1950′s style jazz. It’s got that “Rat Pack” swing-thing going through it. It’s set in Puerto Rico and a lot of the music is influenced by that. LienTraduction approximative..

- Well, you seem pretty busy so far—and what’s happening with The Rum Diary [the adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel, starring Johnny Depp]?
I don’t know. It’s supposed to come out this year, I don’t know what Johnny’s doing.
How was working with Johnny?
It was good. I’m a huge admirer of his. We had a lot of laughs—we had a good time making the movie.
Yeah, he’s a really interesting career trajectory. I mean, 21 Jumpstreet to… the last thing you think that would be a career changer for him, Pirates of the Caribbean. Suddenly he becomes this crazy movie star off of that franchise. Off of Jack Sparrow.
I think the key to that—and the thing I get from Johnny, and from anybody—is that they did it their own way. Instead of trying to please and mold yourself to the studios or to the system, you have to be yourself within the system.
Yeah, Johnny really does that.
He’s really cool, too.

What was working with Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary like? I was a fan of the book written by Hunter S Thompson and also Bruce Robinson who directed it. Working with Johnny Depp was also certainly a plus. I knew the integrity of the material would be protected. What's Johnny Depp like to work with? Is he quite method? He has a personal connection with Hunter S Thompson and carried that with him when we filmed. It felt like I was working with someone who really had a special understanding of the material. Will The Rum Diary change things for you? I've done all sorts of movies and it's hard to be objective about where you are in terms of the films you make. Every film I've done has been a step up. I worked my way up from the bottom and had to work up from being an extra, to a small part, to a one liner, to where I am today. I hope The Rum Diary gets all the attention and accolades it deserves but it's hard to tell before it's released. http://www.metro.co.uk/showbiz/856381-amber-heard-ive-dated-men-and-now-im-in-a-relationship-with-a-woman ~~~ “One day, you’ll wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. - NEW YORK, March, 29, 2011 – It was announced today at CinemaCon, by Bob Berney, President, Theatrical Distribution that FilmDistrict will release “The Rum Diary,” based on the early Hunter S. Thompson novel that was ultimately published in 1998. It stars Johnny Depp and will be released on October 28, 2011. The film is directed by Bruce Robinson (“Withnail and I”) from his own screenplay and also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi. “The Rum Diary” is produced by Infinitum Nihil, the production company headed by Depp and Christi Dembrowski, along with Graham King and Tim Headington. Anthony Rhulen and Robert Kravis also produce.
“The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s “The Lost Generation,” Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man. |

| Sujet: Re: Rhum Express (The Rum Diary) Mer 06 Juil 2011, 12:21 | |
