TORONTO - When a friendly Toronto International Film Festival worker walked among the throng of people gathering outside the Ryerson Theatre and kindly asked them not to rush into the street when Johnny Depp arrived, they smiled and agreed.

Then Johnny Depp arrived. And the screaming tsunami of humanity that surged into the road and swirled around the black SUV pulling up to the red carpet was like that giant whirlpool sucking up the Black Pearl in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

That's the curious thing about Depp: Out of the vast constellation of A-list stars at TIFF, Depp has seemed to provoke the most passionate response, with hundreds of fans spending hours in the rain Saturday just to catch a glimpse of him. For a movie that he's not even in.

Indeed, some of the fans amassed around the theatre on the downtown Ryerson University campus weren't there to see the Canadian premiere of West of Memphis, a documentary about the West Memphis Three produced by Lord of the Rings' Peter Jackson.

They were there strictly for Depp, a vocal supporter of the three men who spent nearly 20 years in jail for the murder of three young boys, despite the lack of physical evidence linking them to the crime.

University students Nicole Thier and Sharon Sefidrouh spent five hours waiting outside the theatre, most of it in the rain, to get a prime spot near the red carpet to see Depp. And that doesn't include the two hours Thier spent online securing tickets to the movie itself.

But the wait was worth it, they said. "He's just different from anyone else, he's been an inspiration to me my whole life. He just inspired me to be different," said Thier, whose handbag and necklace were both emblazoned with pictures of Depp.

"I have all his movies, all his books, soundtracks to everything," she said. "I'm a hardcore fan."

While the crowd skewed towards young and female, all ages and genders were present to catch a glimpse of the 49-year-old star of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Alice in Wonderland and 21 Jump Street, a TV show that aired before some of his fans were born.

"Johnny Depp is my idol," said 14-year-old Eric Hanson, who stood for about two hours at a spot near the red carpet while his family held his place in the lineup that snaked around the block. "So just to see him in person is going to blow my mind."

Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines, who is also lending her support to the film and the push to fully exonerate the West Memphis Three, arrived ahead of Depp but walked the red carpet virtually unnoticed, save for a few shouts of, "Natalie! Natalie." Her short, dark 'do might have been to blame.

That, or the fact the vast majority of the crowd was really just there for Depp, whose entrance set off a frenzy of screams and camera flashes.

"I don't even know what movie is playing," laughed barista Meredith Adams, 26, who was part of a secondary crowd of curious people gathering across the street from the theatre.

"I just heard Johnny Depp is coming, so I want to get a picture of him. And I want to have his babies."

TORONTO - Johnny Depp supported the crusading documentary film West of Memphis as a friend of the family, not as a celebrity advocate, the Hollywood superstar said Saturday.

"I don't think of myself as a celebrity," Depp told a Toronto filmfest press conference just before TIFF screened West of Memphis.

The film documents a gross miscarriage of justice. It is serious stuff. But Depp mocked himself before getting down to business about West of Memphis. "You know, myself, I'm essentially a gas station attendant with a very strange job."

But he knows people will listen when he talks about Damien Echols and two other Arkansas men wrongly convicted of the murder of three young boys. It was a sensationalized case that turned into what Depp calls "a witchhunt." The three spent 18 years in prison. They are still looking to be exonerated because Arkansas officials forced them to plead guilty, despite proving their innocence, before releasing them.

"If there are people out there who will take a minute to listen to what I have to say," Depp said, "and to what these guys have to say, I think they'll learn a lot more about this case. I'm here to support my friends."

West of Memphis is produced by New Zealand filmmakers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh (of Lord of the Rings fame). Jackson said by Skype to Toronto that he wants the film to keep the controversial case alive, especially because Arkansas officials are refusing to deal with evidence that points to the real killer, who is identified in the film. "We thought a documentary film would be the perfect forum to get the evidence out."

Depp befriended Echols and his wife Lorri Davis after seeing an earlier documentary about the case, Paradise Lost. "I just knew that this was a horrific lie," Depp said of the convictions, "and that these boys were innocent." When he met Echols, "there was some kind of brotherly love there that was instant."

Echols and his wife visited Depp's home after Echols got out of prison a year ago. "To finally see Damien arrive at my house on my doorstep was quite moving," Depp said. "It was a celebration. It was beautiful. He and Lorri arrived at my house, we had Tater Tots and tacos, and then a natural course of events took place and we went straight to the tattoo parlour."

TO HELL AND BACK

Damien Echols "went through hell" to get permission to come to Canada to join his pal and advocate Johnny Depp at TIFF for the premiere of the documentary about his case, West of Memphis.

"The U.S. still shows that I still have three counts of murder on my criminal record," Echols told a TIFF press conference Saturday. "So I have to go through all of these extraordinary measures that the average person wouldn't have to."

West of Memphis chronicles how Echols and two other men were wrongly convicted. But they have yet to be fully cleared. "We're going to keep going until we're complete exonerated."

That is exactly what they deserve, Depp said, adding that the film will help. "This is the road to total exoneration."

Johnny Depp Reveals Anguish Over West Memphis Three Injustice
'As a person, I couldn't stand by," the actor tells MTV News about his involvement with Toronto film fest documentary about murders, 'West Of Memphis.'

By Kat Rosenfield

Among the documentaries making waves at this year's Toronto International Film Festival is "West of Memphis," the latest film to examine the wrongful conviction, imprisonment, and subsequent release of the men known as the West Memphis Three. And among those most devoted to getting the word out about the alarming miscarriage of justice, and the filmmakers who brought it to light, is a particularly recognizable celebrity: Johnny Depp, who has been working actively behind the scenes to help the story get the recognition it deserves.

Though Depp has kept a low profile about his involvement, he did sit down with his friend Damien Echols -- one of the defendants who spent 18 years on death row before his conviction was overturned -- and MTV News to discuss how the story of the West Memphis Three first came to his attention.

"I was looking at various documentary filmmakers to do a project, and I ran across 'Paradise Lost,' [co-directors] Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, and of course that was my initial interest in the case," he explained, referring to the trilogy of documentary films that began following the accused men in 1996.

The films, which began by covering the trials and ultimately suggested that evidence had been overlooked or suppressed during the investigation, made a strong impact on Depp, who ultimately became a friend and supporter of both Echols and his wife, Lorri Davis.

"Before I saw anything else or read anything else, I was instantly struck by how heinous a crime [it was], but also the wave of injustice that followed it," Depp said. And though his interest in "West of Memphis" was a professional one initially, it was his personal feelings that compelled him to act -- and that have kept him involved in and supportive of the film as it makes waves in Toronto.

"As a person," he said, "I couldn't stand by and allow that to happen."
